1.1.7ではchrootに
mail_owner = postfix

の項目は必要ありませんでしたでしょうか？
solaris8にて、
postfix-20010228-pl04.tar.gzから、
postfix-1.1.4.tar.gzにアップするとき
に似たようなエラーでつまづいたことがあります。
そのときは、postfixというグループとユーザー、
postdropというグループを作ってうまく起動しました。
