手もとのcyrus-sasl添附のドキュメントには以下のような記載があります。

今回はunixのパスワード認証を行いたい訳ですから、
/usr/local/lib/sasl/smtpd.confへは
      pwcheck_method: passwd

とすれば良いのでは?
